Acrylic Sheets FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Acrylic Sheets
What is the difference between gloss and matt acrylic?
Gloss acrylic has a shiny, reflective finish that enhances colours and creates a polished look, making it ideal for displays and signage. Matt acrylic has a non-reflective, smooth finish that reduces glare and fingerprints, perfect for applications where a subtle, elegant appearance is desired.
What thickness should I choose?
3mm acrylic is versatile and suitable for most applications including signage, picture frames, protective screens, and craft projects. For larger panels or applications requiring more rigidity, consider thicker options. For lightweight decorative uses, thinner sheets may suffice.
How do I cut acrylic sheets?
Acrylic can be cut using a scoring knife for straight lines, a jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade, or a circular saw. Always use masking tape on the cutting line to prevent chipping, and remove the protective film only after cutting.
Can acrylic be used outdoors?
Yes, acrylic is UV resistant and weather-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor use. It won't yellow or become brittle in sunlight like some other plastics.
How do I clean acrylic sheets?
Use a soft, lint-free cloth with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners, paper towels, or rough cloths that can scratch the surface. For stubborn marks, use a cleaner specifically designed for acrylic or plastic.
Is acrylic shatter-resistant?
Yes, acrylic is much more impact-resistant than glass—up to 17 times stronger. While it can crack under extreme force, it won't shatter into dangerous shards like glass.
What's the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate?
Acrylic offers superior clarity and scratch resistance with a glossy finish, whilst polycarbonate is more impact-resistant and flexible. Acrylic is ideal for displays and aesthetic applications, whilst polycarbonate is better for high-impact environments.
